“Humility and Gratitude”: a new lab on OstadElahi inPractice

Several labs on Ostadelahi-inPractice have been inspired by the Fundamentals of the Process of Spiritual Perfection: A Practical Guide since it was published. The first one “Exploring our real self – Defining and grasping the faculties of the human soul” aims at getting to know the faculties of our soul, while fostering an in vivo practice with a view to progressively master their excesses and fulfil their potential. The second one, “The exercise of attention-dialogue – Harnessing the Light of the One”, offers a methodical review of the author’s recommendations for a correct practice of this exercise that he refers to as “one of the pillars of the process of spiritual perfection” and whose purpose is to offer a “form of universal prayer and invocation that can be practiced by anyone sincerely seeking the Truth regardless of individual beliefs and culture”.
In its new lab “Humility and Gratitude – Developing Sincere Love for The One” OstadElahi inPractice once again draws from the Fundamentals of the Process of Spiritual Perfection: A Practical Guide. The lab focuses on the panel “Humility and Gratitude” that appears in chapter 12 “The Exercise of Attention-Dialogue”. The core of the lab rests on this passage, in which Bahram Elahi describes the necessary conditions for sincere love for the One to emerge:
“As long as we have not allowed the flux of humility and gratitude to flow through our hearts, we cannot experience sincere love for the One.”
This passage is immediately followed by a concrete and rigorous method to help us achieve this goal:
“To develop such heartfelt humility and gratitude requires that we remind ourselves of all the blessings that He has bestowed upon us, without expecting anything in return […]. The following is a historical example of gratitude as expressed by one of the great saints…”.
Bahram Elahi, Fundamentals of the Process of Spiritual Perfection: A Practical Guide, Rhinebeck, NY: Monkfish Book Publishing, 2022, p. 154.
This 28-days-straight lab proposes to go deeper into the meaning of this text and to draw from it some guidelines for our daily practice. An excerpt is proposed each day, along with resources meant to stimulate the users’ reflection and practice.
Here is the teaser:
Humility and Gratitude – Developing Sincere Love for The One
How can an affinity for the One that has gradually emerged in our heart be transformed into a sincere and lasting love for Him? Such a heartfelt relationship is actually essential to attract His gaze in our everyday life as well as in moments of attention or heart-to-heart with Him. The Practical Guide provides us with a concrete and rigorous method to help us achieve this. “As long as we have not allowed the flux of humility and gratitude to flow through our hearts, we cannot experience sincere love for the One. To develop such heartfelt humility and gratitude requires that we remind ourselves of all the blessings that He has bestowed upon us, without expecting anything in return […]. The following is a historical example of gratitude as expressed by one of the great saints…”. In this lab, you will be invited to an in-depth exploration of this approach: consider the whole or some part of this text in which we directly speak to the One, think about it, meditate on it and put it into practice at your own pace.
An enriched lab in three languages
On the technical side, this lab offers several new features:
- Usually, 28-days-straight labs propose excerpts that are selected randomly. In this lab, the excerpts are first proposed in the chronological order of the text, and second, once the whole text has been considered, they are proposed randomly. The rate of progress has not changed: it is still free! You can move forward according to your own rhythm, meditating on each excerpt and putting them into practice for as many days as you wish.
- Each excerpt comes with several resources taken from A Practical Guide, but also from Words of Truth, including some anecdotes from Ostad Elahi’s life. These are meant to stimulate reflection and practice.
- The lab will be available early September 2025, in French, English and Italian.

The Exercise of Attention-Dialogue
Bahram Elahi already referred to the exercise of attention-dialogue in La Voie de la Perfection as “one of the pillars of the process of spiritual perfection”. In the Practical Guide it is the subject of a special chapter that can be considered a reference for both theory and practice. This chapter presents numerous “recommendations for a good practice”, providing students of the “new medicine of the soul” with many guidelines resulting from years of research and in-depth experimentation. Exploring our real self
The goal of this lab is to provide help and support in this exploration. Projecting ourselves into these figures means that we should memorize and understand the faculties of the soul from a perspective of functional anatomy (definition, origin, role, relationship to the other faculties, etc.), but it also entails that we practice perceiving and concretely grasping them within ourselves, in vivo, in order to eventually master them and fulfill their potentials. One character weak point after another
Perfecting one’s humanity requires that we establish a precise diagnosis of our character weak points or flaws relating to ethical and divine matters so as to tame and control them. The reservoir of our character weak points is however located in a zone that seems at first to be out of range of our ordinary self-consciousness, namely, our unconscious psyche. How then can we still attempt to concretely make a diagnosis of our character weak points? (…) |

In Ostad Elahi’s footsteps – 28 days straight
One day, one saying, and the possibility to deeply reflect on its content and to build upon it in vivo, at the heart of our daily lives. This time, a selection of 40 excerpts from Words of Truth will take us as close as possible to an approach Ostad Elahi vividly embodied in the smallest details of his life. (…) |

One day, one Maxim – 28 days straight
For those wishing to travel on the road to self-knowledge, it may at times seem more like a maze than a road. How is one to keep moving in the right direction and avoid getting lost? Meditating on principles of wisdom can help us find our way, but there can be no progress unless we put them into practice. How can we then go about combining action and meditation? (…) |

Breaking free from backbiting
“Are you prone to backbiting?” Our immediate response to this question would certainly leave room for no doubt: “Of course not!” Backbiting seems so obviously unethical that no one would think of themselves as a “backbiter”. Yet, there is no single path to backbiting. No matter how obvious or subtle they may be, experience has shown that we go down such paths much more often than we would like to admit. (…) |

Connecting with the Divine
What is prayer? What purpose does it serve? What is its role in the process of spiritual perfection? Under what conditions can one best benefit from prayer? This lab aims at helping you better understand the goal, the effects, and the conditions of prayer, and make the practice of prayer a part of your daily life. |

Toward an in vivo practice
What would be the best approach to begin an ethical and spiritual practice? Focusing on one’s thoughts? On concepts? On actions? What method would be most effective? How can one avoid falling into an imaginary practice with only the illusion of progress? In this first open curriculum lab, it will be up to you to progressively define the content of your work by exploring the foundations of an ethical and spiritual practice that is truly adapted to the soul—that is, an in vivo practice. |

Such a beautiful reminder, true love for the One grows from humility and gratitude.
I’m really looking forward to this new lab!
Where can I find the lab mentioned about gratitude?
Such good news! I can’t wait! I am already inspired by the teaser! How lovely that the lab includes some anecdotes from Ostad’s life. I’ve found that these anecdotes usually stick in my mind or if they are forgotten – at the level of my conscious self – they pop up and come to help me in my time of need, empowering me to face daily challenges and my imperious self.”
@Mahbod, you can find this lab early September 2025 here:
